For individuals living outside of Portugal, paying taxes can seem daunting. However, the Portuguese Tax and Customs Authority (Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira, AT) offers straightforward methods to meet your tax obligations from abroad. This guide outlines the available options.
Payment Options
1. Direct Debit
- Eligibility: Your account must be held in a bank within the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA), which includes EU member states and several other countries (e.g., Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Vatican City).
- Account Confirmation: If your account is not Portuguese, you must confirm ownership by submitting a bank-issued proof. This can be sent:
- Directly from your bank to [email protected].
- Via the e-balcão platform under:
- Tax: Taxpayer Registration
- Issue Type: Activity
- Question: NIB/IBAN.
- By mail to: DSRC, Av. João XXI, n.º 76 – 6.º andar, 1049-065 Lisboa, Portugal.
- Cost: There are no charges for direct debit payments.
- Setup Deadline: Ensure the process is completed by the 15th of the month (or the 10th for installment payments). Initiate the process at least five business days prior to these deadlines.
2. Bank Transfer
- Details to Provide: Share the following details with your bank to ensure proper allocation of your payment:
